7 Major Mistakes in Food Storage

#4 Quick and Easy and Psychological Foods-
Quick and easy foods help you though times when you are psychologically or physically unable to prepare your basic storage items. No cook Foods such as freeze-dried are wonderful since they require little preparation. MRE's (Meals Ready to Eat), such as many preparedness outlets carry, canned goods etc. are also very good. Psychological foods are the goodies - Jello, pudding, candy, etc. - you should add to your storage.
These may sound frivolous, but through the years I've talked with may people who have lived entirely on their storage for extended periods of time. Nearly all of them say these were the most helpful items in their storage to normalize their situations and make it more bearable. These are especially important if you have children.

7 Major Mistakes in Food Storage

2. Balance-
Time and time again I've seen families buy all of their wheat, then buy all of another item, and so on. Don't do that. It's important to keep well balanced as you build your storage. Buy several items, rather than a large quantity of one item. If something happens and you have to live on your present storage, you'll fare much better having a one-month supply of a variety of items than a year's supply of two to three items.

Basic Food Storage List -

These are items to keep your eye our for and build your food storage.

7 Major Mistakes in Food Storage

One more little bit about Food Storage:
I will post the 7 major mistakes in food storage by Vickie Tate over a few days:
1. Containers-
Always store your bulk foods in food storage containers. I have seen literally tons and tons of food thrown away because they were left in the sacks, where they became highly susceptible to moisture, insects and rodents, If you are using plastic buckets make sure they are lined with a food grade plastic liner available from companies that carry packing supplies. Never use trash can liners as these are treated with pesticides. Don't stack them too high. In an earthquake they may topple, the lids pop open, or they make crack. A better container is the #10 tin can which most preparedness companies use when they package their foods.

Provident Living Fair

After some inspiration from the Provident Living fair this past weekend. I ran across this Basic Food Storage List and thought I would post it.
It has helped me keep in the back of my head what I should be looking for when grocery shopping so I can quickly add it to my food storage. I will add one category every few days. You will need to determine how much is needed for your family.
Grains:
Barley
Cereal
Cornmeal
Cous Cous
Flour
Millet
Multi Grain Soup Mix
Oats - rolled quick
Oats - rolled regular
Popcorn
Rye
Rice - white & brown
Sprouting Seeds
Wheat

Darcy and Rachelle really out did themselves to make our in the Kitchen night outstanding!
The best dough recipe and toppings galore, homemade marinara sauce with mozzarella cheese what could be better. Life is good.
If you have ever eaten homemade pizza made off of a Pizza Stone you know what I mean when I say Hotdiggitydog . Crispy, crunchy, slightly charred on the bottom, hot and gooey cheesy pizza that melts in your mouth.

3 to 3 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
2 TBSP olive oil

Start by putting the water and yeast in the bowl of the dough mixer. Then add the olive oil and 1 cup four. Mix. Then add the salt and the rest of the flour. Mix the dough hook for 10 min. Make sure you don't go faster then 2 on the mixer setting. Let the dough rise once. Punch down. Put in greased container and cover tightly -put in the fridge. After a few hours take the dough out and divide onto two or three pieces. Roll out. Add toppings, bake 500'  -10min

This is all of the directions I am going to post. I will have the rest of the directions for anyone who would like - Just let me know.

The book for the this month is a classic - "Wuthering Heights" by Emily Bronte.  The idea is to read the book prior the group discussion night. That evening is Tuesday February 24th at Sister Darcy Daw's.  Along with discussing the book the Pupu theme for the evening is Chocolate.  Anything with chocolate in it and the recipe to share.

Bishop Nakamoto

We finally have our new Bishop!

We're very fortunate and blessed to have such a good, caring, humble brother to lead us. I'm sure he feels like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders, so let's do everything we can to let him know that he's in our prayers, and that we'll sustain him and his counselors with all our hearts by following his counsel. We are fortunate to have Brother Keanaaina and Brother Walters back to help us keep moving forward.

Fortunately for Bishop Nakamoto, he has a "better half" who will be right there standing by his side to support him as well. Let's make sure that Traci also feels our love and support as Bishop is definitely a calling that requires a lot of sacrifice from each member of the family.

How good it is to know that we are lead by inspired men, chosen by our Savior, from our Prophet all the way to our local Bishop.

Kuikahi's

I received an email from Kathy Kuikahi reguarding her daughter Makana who has been in a car accident on Thursday evening.  This is what she had to say .

"She is in stable condition. Still in a great deal of pain. She fights the nurses every time they come in the room.  She has a huge black eye, fractured breast bone, upper rib, C7 vertabre. Cuts and scratches all over her body. Her right foot is badly scraped up on the sole. She was ejected from the back seat out the side window. May be in the hospital for 2-3 days. Lots of prayers please."

Our thoughts  and prayers are with the Kuikahi's.

Just for Thought

I ran across this the other day and wanted to pass it along........

I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.
I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest joys in life may appear bigger.
I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
I wish you enough hellos to get you though the final good-bye.

Hope his lifts your day.
Aloha~
